I haven’t blogged in ages, and I decided it was time to start over fresh with a nice fancy schmancy WordPress blog. This time around I’m just going to stick to certain topics, and not bother with the mundane bits of what I did each day (though of course that will seep in here and there). It’s going to be separate from my webcomic which is kind of a blog unto itself, because maybe this will outlive my comic, who knows?
I’m going to use this to talk about my hobbies with a particular focus on food, movies (particular focus on kung fu movies), movie trailers, anime and video games. Why these things? Because I’m a nerd who loves all of those things, and really the appeal of nerds is listening to them talk about something they love.
Food – I’ve long had aspirations of keeping a log of all the restaurants where I’ve eaten so it’s easy to make recommendations, and I thought it’d be kind of fun to see all the places I’ve eaten at. My entire family loves food whether we’re going to a nice restaurant or making dinner at home.
Movies – For sixteen years my dad owned a laserdisc/DVD store which means that I watched lots and lots of movies growing up (though still fewer than I’d like to admit sometimes). I’m going to focus more on kung-fu movies because I love kung-fu movies, and I love exposing other people to kung fu movies (especially the people who say they’ve only seen Jackie Chan and Jet Li’s American movies *shudder*). Also I’ll talk about specific DVD releases of movies, because there’re a lot out there each of varying legitimacy.
Movie Trailers – After college I worked in the movie trailer industry for 3+ years, and it’s a lot of fun to talk about because it’s one of those things that no one knows anything about except the people working in the industry and their close friends. So I’ll probably talk about some of my favorite movie trailers, and try to use them to illustrate something you probably didn’t know about movie trailers but always wondered.
Anime - There’re tons of anime review sites out there so this will be less of a focus, but since anime is one of the biggest hobbies in my life it’d be silly not to talk about. I first got into anime during high school with Tenchi Muyo and much more later in college. Thinking back, I have memories from when I was a kid of being being scared to of the Ohmu from Nausicaa, watching a bit of Grave of the Fireflies (made it as far as their mother bleeding through her bandages) and also bits of Akira before my sisters realized I shouldn’t be watching it. Of course I also watched dubbed anime on TV like Robotech, Space Keteers, Gaiking, and Voltron. My proudest otaku achievement is being named after Derek Wildstar from Star Blazers.
Video Games – This will also be less of a focus because I don’t have a lot of time lately to play, but it’s still something I do so I might as well talk about it every now and then. Right now I have a 1990 Gameboy (still works!), Gameboy SP, DS Lite, PSX, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii.
So that’s the intro, hopefully it will be interesting to read. I haven’t set any kind of schedule, but I have a lot of catching up to do so I’ll do my best to make it daily. If you don’t find it especially interesting but keep reading that’s probably because you’re in my family and you’d read it anyway.
